Getting to Vis used to require being born there or drafted by Yugoslavia's military. Now all you need to do is take a ferry to the furthest populated island off the Adriatic coast. Due to its strategic position, Vis has always been coveted by Europe's naval powers. Under Tito, it became a military stronghold. Remnants from this period are a major attraction. With its rugged Adriatic coastline and nearby small islands, there's plenty of natural beauty to explore. The sights include the famous Blue Cave on Bisevo island and the neighboring Green Cave. Plus there are some stunning beaches and hidden coves. The accommodations on Vis are nice too, from apartments with all the amenities, to villas and beach hotels.
Vineyards, olive groves, and green vegetation cover the sparsely populated interior of Vis. The locals are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Wine lovers praise Vis for the wine made from its native Vugava white grapes. Unlike most other parts of Croatia, Vis had a late start in tourism and this has turned out to be quite a blessing. It is not the easiest island to access. But the laid-back atmosphere, excellent seafood and local cuisine, quaint port towns, and beautiful natural surroundings exemplify Croatia's slogan of being "the Mediterranean as it once was." A visit to Vis will be a highlight of your vacation in Croatia. It's like heaven on the Dalmatian coast. This is the perfect place to stop and relax, before or after visiting cities like Hvar, Split, or Zadar. Vis was the filming location for Mamma Mia 2, standing in for a Greek island, and the movie's fans do visit, but the island's strict building laws ensure that a tourism explosion is not a threat.

What we love about Vis
Marketing Director
I've been to a lot of Croatia's islands but Vis is easily tops for me. Being further out than the others, combined with its history as a military island, has kept it untouched by mass tourism. There are hardly any hotels and the pace of life is as slow as you could want. The locally grown food and wine is fantastic and the people very friendly and laid back. Oh and our guide on Vis, Medo, is so much fun.

I find Vis to be the most peaceful island in Croatia. It is definitely untouched and very peaceful, which distinguishes it from some of its neighbors. Time seems to pass very very slowly, when it doesn't stop altogether. The island's past as a military island forbidden to visitors just makes it more interesting. What impressed me the most is the laid back atmosphere and numerous, stunning hidden bays. You can often find beaches that you can enjoy by yourself! You really feel like all the stress of a daily life is taken away while there. Once you visit, it's hard not to return!
Local Teams Specialist & Senior Adriatic Destination Expert
In my eyes, Vis makes for a perfect summer destination. Laid-back, it represents just the right balance of history, nature, beaches, number of visitors, together with its gastronomy and enology offer. With its Blue and Green Caves, many secluded beaches, Vis town, Komiža (an old fishing village), and many kilometers of hidden tunnels, some now used by top-notch wineries, this island will leave you speechless many times over.
