If you think you can learn about the Roman Empire only in Italy, we have a surprise in store. The small neighboring country of Croatia located across the Adriatic Sea is not only known for its beautiful coast and more than a thousand islands, but also for its significant historical heritage. As a part of the vast Roman Empire two millennia ago, Croatian territory today boasts some truly amazing monuments such as Diocletian’s Palace in Split, the Roman Amphitheater in Pula, and the Roman Forum in Zadar, as well as a recently discovered Ancient Roman archaeological site of Andautonia near Zagreb.
Professional local tour guides will not only take you to the sites but will also explain the whole context of that time, essential to understanding the magnificence of the Roman Empire. And of course, there will be enough time to relax and enjoy other aspects of beautiful Croatia.
The services that we provide as a part of our comprehensive travel packages include small and boutique accommodation, historical city tours, gastronomy and other themed private and small group tours. 2 Nights in Zagreb

2 Nights in Zagreb
Zagreb is a city where different worlds have long come together. Situated at the intersection of ancient trade routes between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is a cosmopolitan place with various cultural influences evident in the cuisine and architecture at home in any Austro-Hungarian city. You’ll love exploring the open-air markets, impressive buildings, peaceful parks, and many delicious restaurants. Just strolling through the unique combination of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, ancient churches, and market squares is a pleasure, but there’s much more to do here. After exploring all that the city has to offer with a local guide, you’ll be able to make the most of your time. You could also take a guided bike tour around the city, to get a little exercise as you experience the city. But you’ll also want to explore some of the region surrounding Zagreb. As a longer day trip, you could see the delightful Trakoscan, a neo-Gothic castle sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by a romantic English style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake. While you’re there you can also stop in Varazdin to appreciate its ornate baroque architecture.

2 Nights in Zadar

2 Nights in Zadar
Zadar might lack the big name glitz of Split down the coast, but this bustling university city's peninsular Old Town also dates back to Roman times. The central forum and original city gates set the tone. The marbled limestone of the main street, Kalelarga, echoes Dubrovnik's Stradun, but Zadar is very much its own city, as evidenced by installations like the wave-powered Sea Organ and the showy Greeting to the Sun. When in Zadar, be sure to find a vantage point along the Riva (waterfront) to admire what Hitchcock considered "the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West...applauded at every evening". As well as exploring the historic sites of Zadar's Old Town, there's plenty to do in the region. The Plitvice, Krka, Paklenica, and Kornati Islands National Parks are all within easy reach for day trips, either with an organized group, private guide, or on your own by rental car. If you want to spend a little time on the beach, there are several sandy beaches in the area, a relative rarity in Croatia, including the Nin lagoon, which is often regarded Croatia's most beautiful beach.

A Simple Stroll Around the City
On your first night in Zadar, why not start with a tranquil stroll down Kalelarga, the city's lively main street? Immerse yourself in the charm of the bustling atmosphere and take in the local shops along the way. Make sure to visit the iconic Church of St. Donatus, a historic gem that stands as a testament to Zadar's rich heritage. Head towards the seafront to experience the unique Sea Organ. Marvel at this architectural wonder that turns the natural rhythm of the waves into melodic tunes. Let the soothing sounds of the sea enhance the sunset and the evening as you bask in the serene ambiance of this coastal city. Conclude your evening with a peaceful dinner at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of Croatian cuisine.

Day 6
Day 6 - Your First Full Day in Zadar

Zadar Roman Heritage Private Walking Tour
In 48 BC, centuries after its foundation, Zadar became the Roman colony of "Iader" and acquired the typical characters of a Roman city, such as streets arranged in a grid, a Forum, and an elevated Capitolium with a temple. Excavations since have revealed a trove of Roman remnants, some still on display where they were found and some safely stored in the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Ancient Glass, which you'll visit on this tour.
The Most Beautiful Sunset
Zadar, a city in Croatia, is renowned for hosting some of the country's most breathtaking sunsets, a spectacle that even captivated the legendary Ernest Hemingway. Strolling along the extensive seaside promenade provides visitors with an enchanting experience, offering panoramic views of the sun sinking into the Adriatic Sea. The city's most popular attraction, the Sea Organ, adds another layer to the sensory delight. Positioned along the waterfront, this architectural marvel harnesses the natural rhythm of the waves, transforming them into a harmonious melody that resonates throughout the area.

Day 7
Day 7 - Traveling to Split by Private Transfer
Today you're off to Split, with some stops along the way to help you make the most of your day. First, you'll head to Trogir, a UNESCO-protected island town just across the bay from Split. There, you'll enjoy some free time (about an hour) for exploration. You'll continue to Klis, a medieval fortress overlooking Split, the sea, and the islands beyond. Once a key part of Dalmatia's defenses, this imposing fortress is now used for films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones. You'll then enjoy some local cuisine at the Stella Croatica family estate. The duration of the journey stops included, is about 5 hours.
Please note that this is a non guided transfer with a local English-speaking driver.

3 Nights in Split
The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Day 7
Day 7 - Arrival in Split
Your driver will bring you straight to your accommodations upon arrival in Split.
The Right Place for Ancient Times
The best way to get started in Split is to spend time on the former grounds of Diocletian's Palace. Visit Peristil, the palace's main square, sit on its ancient stairs, and enjoy the remarkable view. Or take a seat at a cafe on the square to order a glass of local wine and take it easy. If you need to stretch your legs, head on a pleasant walk on the West Coast and enjoy the light sea breeze and amazing view of the main Riva promenade and the Palace. On the West Coast (Zapadna Obala), you will discover an interesting fact about Split: it is considered the sportiest town in the world. Here, you will find the names of more than 80 Olympic winners from Split! Take your pick among the area's many bars for a delicious cocktail!

Day 8
Day 8 - Your First Full Day in Split

Split and Salona Roman Heritage Private Tour
This amazing Roman tour starts with Diocletian’s Palace in Split, an extraordinary all-in-one Roman military complex, imperial residence, and fortified town. After you are done admiring the palace, you will visit the Archaeological Museum, a treasure trove of artifacts from the ancient Roman settlements of Split and neighboring Salona, once one of the largest Roman cities. Your private driver and guide will also take you to see the ruins of Salona, the Roman capital of Dalmatia, and Emperor Diocletian's birthplace.
The Walls and Ways of Split
Split's old town is an excellent representative of ancient Roman architecture. Getting lost in Diocletian's Palace, you'll wonder how the place's massive stones could have been hauled here and carved 1,700 years ago. Split's past is made clear by its landmarks, such as the world's second oldest cathedral (only Armenia has anywhere older), which was originally Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum. A short distance away, you'll find a pagan temple likewise turned into an early church.

Day 9
Day 9 - Your Second Full Day in Split
Split is a Piece of Art
Visiting the Gallery of Ivan Mestrovic is an excellent way to enjoy the beauty of art, history, and architecture combined with colorful horticulture. The stone columns, wooden beams, and remarkable indoor design are not to be missed. Mestrovic gained worldwide fame and has influenced generations of sculptors and artists. If you are interested in supporting local art, you can also visit the Jaman Art Gallery, where the art is characterized by vivid colors.

Eat Like a Local
Experience the true essence of Split by joining exclusive small dinner gathering hosted by welcoming locals. Delight in authentic Croatian cuisine while engaging in conversations with our hosts, who share their stories and traditions. This unique dining experience offers a taste of local flavors and the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers. Rest assured you wil create unforgettable memories and discover Split from an insider's perspective.
